Holly Muffin Now Has Its' Own Domain & Facebook Page

It's official!
Today Holly Muffin officially became

After years of blogging, I decided on a whim that it was time for Holly Muffin to have it's own domain...and here it is!

For some reason, in the last few years I've promoted my blog to people I don't know in fear that it might be awkward to share this much of my life with those who I do know. After hitting some big milestones (page hits and other opportunities), it crossed my mind several times that I should take this blog to the next level. Something always held me back.

It's been 5+ years now that I've been blogging, and it has truly become a passion of mine. I've slowly worked my way up to this step, and I'm excited that I finally feel ready.

To celebrate, I've also created a Facebook page for Holly Muffin. I would love for you to follow and keep up with my posts there.

Currently... June 2015

Watching: Mad Men. I just finished and I have to say, I'm highly disappointed. The first few seasons were great, but the ending really just made me angry.

Eating: Frozen fruit.

Doing: Meeting with people regarding our wedding. I hate dragging the kids to all of the appointments, but I really want to get all of the big decisions out of the way before I go back to work in the Fall.

Thinking: About all the improvements we should be making to our house. I like to get ahead of myself and plan things that we can't actually do for years. It's a blessing and a curse.

Planning: Our summer with the kids- activities, trips, etc. We leave for our first trip up North next week!

5 Kid Things I Will Never Splurge On

1. Via 2. Via 3. Via 4. Via 5. Via

My girls are currently 6 and 7 years old and my boy is 7 months old. For my kids, I've come to realize that there are just some things that are useless to spend money on. This list, of course, mostly applies to little girls as I don't have much experience with little boys yet.

1. BooksKids love books, but books are very fragile. Babies chew on books, toddlers colour on books and rip pages, and older kids bend and crack the spines of books. Our family buys most of our books at thrift stores. When the girls get a little bit older, brand new books may become logical, but right now they're just not.

2. ShoesIt's no secret that kids grow like weeds. I always buy things like boots and running shoes a size or two bigger than the current size in order to be able to keep them fitting longer, but it still seems absolutely ridiculous to me to spent anything over $30 on a pair of kid shoes. It's a fact - Kids will put holes in running shoes, scuff the top of boots, and get sandals dirtier than can be cleaned. Most of the time they don't even stay in good enough shape to be passed down to a younger sibling. Payless Shoes has clearance sales a few times a year where I pick up "fancy" shoes for $9.99. I also watch Walmart, Joe Fresh, and other stores for their seasonal clearance and stock up in bigger sizes for the next year.

3. Pants- It seems like once a week my girls are ripping or staining their leggings. It boggles my mind because they aren't rough kids at all. The problem is that sometimes they fall (hole in the knee), sometimes they sit down in the schoolyard and catch on something (hole in the butt), and sometimes they kneel on a bunch of grass and rocks (hole in the knee + intense grass stains). Walmart sells leggings for $4 a pair in pretty much every colour possible and to be honest, the quality is the same or better than everywhere else I've purchased from. Because of this, I will not buy leggings anywhere else if they are more than $4. If you've got some really rough kids, Dollarama is now selling decently constructed leggings at $3 a piece.

4. Outdoor Play Equipment- I seriously don't know why anyone buys this stuff new. Swing sets and jungle gyms are meant to be played on and they get dirty and scratched no matter what. For example, this is the jungle gym that we currently have in our backyard. As you can see it retails for nearly $600. We found it on Kijiji for $150. We also have several smaller climbers that we found on Kijiji for $50 or less. Kids get bored of what's in their backyard quickly and also outgrow play equipment faster than you think.

5. Colouring Items- My kids fly through colouring books, markers, and crayons like you wouldn't believe. Why? They leave the caps off of markers, break crayons in half, and will colour one line on a piece of paper before saying they messed up and need to start over. We currently buy notebooks, markers, and crayons at Dollarama and buy colouring books at the dollar store or Michaels ($1 per colouring book and most are character licensed!). We also recycle everything we can. Sometimes I'll come across a $10 colouring book and wonder who would ever buy it, but people do!

Cover FX BB Gel Mattifying Anti-Blemish Treatment Review

A little while ago, I posted about a Sephora haul. In that haul was a sample of Cover FX's BB Gel Mattifying Anti-Blemish Treatment which I had picked out as a bonus for my online order.

I absolutely love trying new products that might help with my acne, and I'm glad I found this one.

What I liked:

My first impression of this BB gel when I squeezed it out was that it felt like a tinted moisturizer. It was very light on my fingertips and didn't feel sticky at all.

Upon application, I was pleasantly surprised. It felt very moisturizing, but not heavy as to clog my pores. I found it very easy to move around my face with just my fingers. For some reason I expected a heavy foundation type feel, and that's not what I got at all.

The finish was my favourite part of this product. It sets on the skin very matte and extra light and almost as a perfect base for other makeup. The extreme lightness allowed for me to add my normal concealer and foundation overtop without worrying I had cake-face.

What I didn't like:

As to whether or not this gel "treated" my acne or not, I don't know. It didn't seem to get better or worse. Many products make my acne flare up severely, so it's definitely a win that it didn't happen with this.

Overall Thoughts:

I love the idea of this product for light everyday wear. As I said, it reminds me a lot of a tinted moisturizer- not enough coverage to wear for a night out, but just enough for school pick-ups and grocery store runs. The anti-blemish factor is definitely a plus, but even without it, this product is great!

Our Wedding: The Engagement Story

My Engagement Ring

Easter weekend 2015, Chris convinced me to let CJ stay the night at his mom's house so that we could celebrate our 5th anniversary on April 21st. The plan was to drop off the kids and head in to the city for dinner and some time at the casino.

The day came and things were going exactly as planned. We packed up the car, headed to his mom's house, dropped the kids off, and headed in to the city. We went to dinner at an Italian restuarant we had never been to. A saxophone player set the mood and I was surprised with a flower delivery from a sweet girl that Chris works with.

After dinner, we headed over to the casino. We each took out $40 and played the penny slots for about an hour. I broke even and Chris ended up winning around $100, so we decided to leave.

"Should we just head home?" I asked.

"Yeah. We could head home...or we could head up to our room," Chris responded as he pulled a room key out of his pocket and smirked at me. I was so surprised.

The entire walk to the casino hotel, I remember asking if he was serious and then going in to panic mode because I had no clothes, makeup, hygiene products- nothing! He told me not to worry and began explaining how everything I needed was upstairs. I was overwhelmed and confused.

We got to our hotel room and Chris opened the door. Our song (which will also be our wedding song) was playing, the lights were dimmed, and there were rose petals covering the floor. All of my favourite snacks as well as my favourite champagne were displayed on a table. Chris hugged me and simply said "Happy anniversary, babe."

I was so overwhelmed that I cried for at least 30 minutes. We sat on the bed, cracked the bottle of champagne, and Chris began to explain how he had made this happen without me knowing anything (I'll get to this later).

Our hotel room was insanely hot and I needed to compose myself after crying, so I suggested we go outside. Chris then suggested that we take a walk down by the Detroit river, which we used to do all the time when we began dating. Chris actually asked me to be his girlfriend there.

We got down to the riverfront and walked for 10 minutes. The fresh air felt great. I finally composed myself, so we stopped across from the GM Building and talked.

I remember standing there for about 30 seconds and saying how amazing it was that Chris had managed to pull this surprise off. I then remember Chris telling me how I deserved it and he was glad to see me happy. He told me how much he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Of course, I told him I felt the same way.

He told me to close my eyes at that point, so I did. When I opened my eyes he was down on one knee with an open ring box. He asked me to marry him.

I'm not even sure that I said yes for an entire 5 minutes after he stood up and hugged me. I just began to cry. I was so surprised, confused, happy, and overwhelmed that I didn't even know how to respond.

It took some time to comprehend what had just happened, but I did say yes!

After taking some time to compose myself again, we headed back up to our hotel room. This is where he began to explain to me how he managed to pull this whole thing off.

It all began Easter weekend when he had his mom convince me to leave the baby for a night. After that, he found a ring. The ring was my biggest confusion- I work on our budget 3 times every month and hadn't noticed any money missing or spent. It turns out that he had purchased the ring during a 0 down promotional event and asked them not to send any of the paperwork to our house. He kept the ring in his desk at work.

The night before we went out, he had my best friend Becky ask me to out for sushi. We usually go once a week, so I didn't think anything of it. While I was out, he packed me a bag of things I wouldn't notice were missing.

When the day came, he managed to grab the rest of my essentials while I was getting the kids in the car. He grabbed my hair and makeup products as well as clothes and hygiene products and snuck a bag into the car. To this day, I still have no idea how I missed that.

After he explained his crazy plan and we called our friends and family, we laid in bed, snacked, and watched our favourite movie.

The night was absolutely perfect and I will never forget it.

I definitely picked a good one.

We snapped this as soon as we got back to the hotel.
Red eyes from crying millions of happy tears!
It's everything I ever imagined.

Schlage Camelot Door Lever Review

Disclaimer: I recieved this door lever from Chick Advisor to test and review.

When I recieved the email that I would be testing this door handle, I was extremely excited. We have recently begun renovations on our first home, so this makes things a bit easier!

To properly review this handle, I decided to install it 100% by myself. I was a bit worried as I have never done anything similar to this.

To my surprise, I did it. No issues at all. I put the baby in his chair and went for it! All I needed was a screwdriver, and I was done in 10 minutes.

The change is amazing. It's crazy how such a little thing can change the look and feel of everything.

Overall, I am very impressed by the quality, design, and easy installation of the Scalage door lever. I would definitely purchase this product for my home! Check out the other reviews for this level here.
