Holiday Hostess Hacks

Playing hostess does not come natural to me.

I love the idea of being a legendary hostess, but can never pull it off. This year, my husband volunteered us to host Christmas dinner and I am absolutely stressed. Although I enjoy decorating, cooking, and socializing, I don't enjoy being responsible for everyone's good time. Our house isn't small, but I tend to get overwhelmed very easily when we have more than a few guests.

With that in mind, I've tried to come up with some tips to keep me cool, calm, and collected as well as organized and prepared for our party.

Tip #1: Keep the kids occupied - Board games are my favourite, but this year I plan on having a gingerbread house building station set up at the kids table.

Tip #2: Shop for food and drinks well in advance - Stores get crazy the week of Christmas, which just adds to the holiday stress. By the time this post is up, you should be done shopping!

Tip #3: Make it a potluck! - When everyone helps, it's easier to relax. As a bonus, you'll also get a nice variety of food.

Tip #4: Pick out games and music - We love to put on the "fireplace" channel with Christmas music and play card games or dice. We also have a ping-pong table that tends to keep adults entertained.

Tip #5: Plan a secret Santa or gift exchange - This guarantees some laughs. Set a limit (this year ours is $25) and have fun with it.

Tip #6: Don't go overboard - I really don't think that everyone needs an elaborate gift or individual place cards. Keep it light and fun. I like a simple Christmas tablecloth paired with some fun serving dishes and our usual Christmas decor.

Bumble Box Review

A little while ago, I won an Instagram contest through an amazing Canadian company called BumbleBox. I was so excited when they messaged me to let me know I would be getting a box!

Basically, BumbleBox is a subscription box service for Canadian moms. Their slogan says it all - "Canadian Moms. Cool Stuff. At Your Door." I couldn't wait.

When my box arrived, the following things were included:

1. Litsie Snack Bag - Eco-friendly and Reusable Storage - This bag retails on Etsy for $8-$10 CAD. It comes in several patterns (not just awesome robots!), zips closed, and has an easy to clean plastic lining.

2. Eat Sleep Drool "Fly Guy" Onsie - This exact onsie isn't listed on Etsy, but similar ones retail for $16-$18 CAD. The material is light and breathable - perfect for summer.

3. Sweet Sparrow Design Striped Toy Strap - This strap retails on Etsy for $12.42 CAD (strap only). I actually think this product is genius. It has snaps that allow it to adjust and hold a variety of items - soothers, toys, etc. I find it extremely useful in the car to keep my son's sippy cup off the floor.

4. OXO CottonCandyKisses Bib - This exact bib isn't listed on Etsy, but similar bibs retail for $5.99 CAD. The bib is very well made, reversible, and comes in tons of cute patterns. My favourite thing about this bib is the size. It provides full coverage for a messy toddler.

5. Pacha Mama Body Care Revive Body Butter - This body butter retails on Etsy for $17.95 CAD (larger jar than pictured below). The second I used this stuff, I fell in love. It's made from all natural ingredients and it really does feel like butter on my skin.

Everything in this box was amazing, but there were two things that really stood out to me.

The reusable snack bag has been extremely useful for me in both my older daughter's lunch bag and my toddler's diaper bag. It's a great size, wipes clean in 2 seconds, and actually stays closed when I need it to.

The Revive Body Butter is a revelation for me. It works better than any similar product I've ever tried and trust me, I've tried plenty. It moisturizes extremely well without feeling greasy, is made from all natural ingredients such as beeswax and shea butter, smells lovely, and truly honestly has worked wonders for my skin. As soon as I run out, I will 100% be ordering more. I also look forward to trying out some other products from Pacha Mama.

In summary, the Bumble Box was such a cool new experience for me. The products are all very high quality, thoughtfully made, and Canadian. I love that this company supports local businesses and mothers!

A Bumble Box would be the perfect baby shower or new baby gift. Check them out here.
